Does stainless steel pipe rust?

- May 14, 2020-

Many people wonder whether stainless steel pipe rusts. Normally, after stainless steel is polished into beautiful surface, it possesses high corrosion resistance and inherent surface properties, with wide uses. In general, 304 stainless steel pipe is highly resistant to corrosion in the air or in ordinary chemical medium. It is typically represented by 13 chromium steel, 18-8 chromium nickel steel and other high alloy steel. Based on metallographic analysis, stainless steel contains chromium, a very thin chromium film forms on the surface, which protects the steel from invasion of oxygen corrosion. Therefore, to maintain the inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel, steel must contain over 12% of chromium. While 316 stainless steel pipe may perform much better in this compared to 304 stainless steel tube.

The very condition, stainless steel pipe rusts, is when put in an environment of 100 chloride ions, it will corrode quickly. To be more specific, alloy elements in the stainless steel are not dissolved into the matrix, resulting in low alloy content of the matrix, poor corrosion resistance. And when there is no titanium and niobium and other materials, intercrystalline corrosion will occur as well. In addition, low carbon content will lead to intercrystalline corrosion of stainless steel.

After the deep processing of stainless steel tube or the grinding of the further products, the defects of point-like indentation will appear on the surface of the products. And stainless steel molding products in grinding or other circumstances, a stuff like the shape of orange peel will form.
